Eric Bates
Rhode Island College

Eric Michael Bates was born and raised in Putnam, CT, where he graduated from high school.  He was interested in math, science, teaching, and working with people.  A career in nursing was a logical choice when he realized the vast opportunities that were available, the increasing demand, and the ability to combine all his interests into one career that is always changing.  He chose Rhode Island College because of the reputation of the School of Nursing and the variety of clinical settings in which the students are able to gain experience

Eric has been employed at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT for two years.
He spent his first year as a patient care technician assisting nurses through all the phases in the nursing process.  During the summer of 2006, he took part in an internship in the Emergency department at the hospital where he focused his attention on assessments and interventions to become more acclimated to the nursing environment.  Eric is also a three-time winner of the Susan Chilkott Memorial Scholarship given annually by Day Kimball Hospital to individuals residing in the hospital’s service area who are pursuing a career in Nursing.

In December of 2006, Eric was inducted into the Delta Upsilon Chapter at-Large of Sigma Theta Tau International.  After graduation in May of 2007, Eric would like to pursue a career as an ER nurse.  He likes the fast paced environment and the fact that no patient is ever the same.  Eric also has no greater satisfaction then when he sees patients come in to the hospital at their worst, cares for them, and then sees them on their day of discharge and knows that he had some role in helping them achieve an improved health status.  He plans on pursuing a master’s degree in either acute/critical care or business administration.  Being involved in a professional organization will provide more opportunities and Eric is excited about what his future has to offer him.
